3 Ways to Future-Proof Your Business For the 2020s and Beyond

Just because your business is profitable now doesn’t mean success is guaranteed into the future. For this reason, the best and brightest company bosses are continually innovating and scaling, keeping one eye on tomorrow while taking steps to remain relevant. It’s not just a question of surviving as tech and consumer expectations evolve; it’s about routinely adapting to exploit opportunities bequeathed by shifting paradigms. Here are a few things you can do to protect your startup moving forward.

Make payment a breeze

Sounds obvious, right? But you’d be startled by how many businesses make their preferred method of payment the only method of payment. While some customers will be happy to punch in their bank details, many would prefer to use PayPal or Venmo, or to set up a rolling direct debit subscription. Others might want to pay using a prepaid card or with cryptocurrency, since the growth of digital assets is inevitable in the years ahead – particularly as countries are actively exploring central bank digital currencies.

Make sure your company policy is to accept as wide a range of payment options as it can realistically handle, which should go some way towards reducing your dropped cart percentage. Novel payment gateways are likely to proliferate in the years ahead, so cultivating a reputation for convenient payment options is a terrific idea.

Embrace remote working

Some businesses didn’t need a pandemic to convince them that employing a remote team was an advantage. But when the crisis hit, they were much better positioned than their brick-and-mortar competitors. By having the infrastructure in place to enable home working, you can attract bright candidates from around the world who are enticed by such a forward-looking philosophy – one that is increasingly becoming normalized, especially among young startups. With home working in place some or all of the time, your business can be agile, with reductions in overheads (office space, supplies) and improvements in productivity and employee wellbeing. Of course, you’ll need to keep abreast of the best tech tools to enable effective home working and maintain a team ethic. At the moment, that tends to mean Slack and Zoom, among others.

Become a data expert

All businesses are data-driven in the digital age. Now more than ever, companies can determine who their customers are – their age, their occupation, where they live, what they like, when they buy, how they think. All too often, though, this data piles up without ever being tapped for insight and turned into action. To future-proof your business, you should endeavor to become a data expert, crunching the Google Analytics numbers and conducting A/B split tests to determine the way forward. You can also use data analytics to shape your social marketing, building personalized experiences to attract the right customers and increase retention. Whether you do this yourself or delegate the task to a full-time e-commerce data analyst is up to you. The important thing is to put data at the heart of your business, and leverage it to provide a richer customer experience.

None of us have a crystal ball, but if you follow these steps, the longevity of your business will surely increase. Keep an open mind, stay up to date with industry trends and put your best foot forward.
